English
At High Wycombe Primary School our English program is based on the West Australian Curriculum and focuses on developing each student's knowledge, understanding and skills in reading, writing, viewing, speaking, and listening.
We have developed a whole school approach to teaching core literacy skills based on the Science of Reading, with Explicit Instruction being the most commonly used method of delivery. Teachers at H.W.P.S follow the I Do, We Do, You Do model to introduce new concepts, ensuring all students can achieve success by continuously checking for understanding. This newly learnt content is then reviewed on a regular basis in what is called a ‘daily review’.
We use a range of evidence-based programs, learning strategies and resources to address the three learning areas in the English curriculum (Language, Literacy and Literature), these include:
- Let’s Decode
- Spelling Mastery
- Seven Steps Writing
- Brightpath Writing
- The Writing Revolution
- Decodable home readers
- The Writing Revolution
- Daily Review
- Reading Mastery and Corrective Reading (Intervention programs)
